Italian Sub Salad is such a simple and delicious dinner or side dish idea. It’s all the fixings of your favorite hoagie without the bread. On warm weather nights this sub salad is a full meal.

Italian Sub Salad is the number one requested picnic dish in our family. The recipe is so quick and easy and most times I have the ingredients on hand.

I like the fact that the recipe doesn’t need to be followed in detail. You can add and adjust to your family’s personal tastes and eating habits. Dump and pour recipes are my favorite!

Feel free to add anything else your family would eat on a hoagie or sub. You can serve this as a salad or on rolls if you like. 

What do I put in a hoagie salad?

This is just a suggestion of ingredients. Just like the best hoagie or sub, you get to put on whatever you like! This sub salad is perfect because you can put on the things you like and leave out anything you don’t like!

If you have picky eaters in the house you can always whip up the base of the salad with the meat, cheese, sauce, and lettuce and let everyone add their own toppings!

  • Iceberg lettuce
  • Hard salami
  • Pepperoni
  • Ham
  • Turkey
  • Cheese (your choice)
  • Italian dressing
  • Onion thinly sliced
  • Tomatoes cubed
  • Mayo
  • Italian Seasoning
  • Black olives
  • Sweet peppers
  • Hot peppers
  • Pickles
  • Cucumbers
  • Peppers

How to make this easy sub salad:

Clean lettuce and tear into bite size pieces and place in large bowl with onion.

Chop meat and cheeses into bite size pieces.

Toss together those ingredients and then add dressing and toss again.

Add mayo and toss once more! Add more dressing or mayo if needed so that it’s saucy enough for your taste!

Add any optional ingredients you might like and then sprinkle with Italian Seasoning.

Gently fold in Tomatoes.

Chill and serve immediately.

Can I make this Italian Sub Salad in advance?

This salad does not store well. Plan to eat it all in one sitting or you will have a soggy mess of leftovers. Great for tailgates, picnics, pot lucks and more. Makes a great all in one meal on a hot summer evening! Enjoy.

The good news is that you can make this recipe in a flash. It doesn’t need a lot of prep work so you don’t have to worry that you can’t prep this one in advance!

Ingredients

  • Large head Iceberg lettuce
  • 1/4 lb hard salami
  • 1/4 lb pepperoni
  • 1/4 lb ham
  • 1/4 lb turkey
  • 1/2 lb cheese (your choice)
  • 1/8 C Italian dressing
  • small onion thinly sliced
  • 2 medium tomatoes cubed
  • 2 - 3 TBSP mayo
  • 1/2 tsp Italian Seasoning
  • Optional ingredients
  • black olives
  • sweet peppers
  • hot peppers
  • pickles
  • cucumbers
  • peppers

Instructions

  1. This is commonly called antipasto salad! Mix the meat and cheese with Italian dressing put over lettuce when served
    Nothing new….

      1. We make something like this and if we have to transport to another location we just prepare the lettuce and put in a separate container or plastic zip lock bag and mix just before serving. The other ingredients are fine if they are mixed a little earlier, in fact the flavors are melded and taste great.

    1. I make a variation of this. Leave out the lettuce and just use the tri-color shredded cabbage. Green onion. Homemade no carb dressing and I add real bacon bits and Colby jack shredded cheese. Its almost NO carbs and it’s very tasty!!
