AWays to Keep Your Aging Parents Safe at (1)

Keep your aging parents safe at home What comes to mind when you hear that phrase? For me it means, that aging parents are important, deserve respect and need to be able to keep their dignity intact. I think families need to have conversations about safety and security, so aging parents feel like the important family members they are and always will be.

My in-laws are in their late 70’s, so I know the days of them needing increased care is right around the corner. Right now our families main objective is finding a balance between what our aging parents want and how we can keep them safe. Everyone knows what they think is best, but is it really? I hope that planning ahead will save us some struggles and heartache.

I think it’s best we all start taking small steps, since change can cause tension and I don’t want any hard feelings. My in-laws have been married for 54 years and are set in their ways. Baby steps!

Our first step was having my in-laws try out the VTech SN6197  CareLine™ Corded/Cordless Answering System. They spend a lot of their time outside away from phone contact. They do own cell phones but don’t really know who to use them. Being able to use a cordless phone or pendant for immediate contact with us or 911 during emergencies is a huge relief. Shh…don’t tell my in-laws that I had an ulterior motive having them use the VTech SN6197  CareLine™ Corded/Cordless Answering System. I told them, I found this new phone system, I knew they would love. They don’t know it’s a phone system giving my family peace of mind.

Last week, we set up the phone and asked them to give it a try. Baby steps! My father-in-law likes to wear things around his neck, so it was easy to get home to try the Portable Safety Pendant Every day contacts (like our us) and emergency calls are just a speed-dial button away. He chose to wear his around his neck, but you can also clip it on. The Portable Safety Pendant will be great when he’s outside for work or pleasure.

Both of my in-laws wear hearing aids. The VTech SN6197 provides Voice Amplification. Increasing the sound decibels on incoming calls, will save others having to repeat themselves and the in-laws will actually know what’s going on, because they will hear the phone conversation!

No monthly monitoring fees. I think this was my father-in-laws favorite part, he’s a penny pincher. Being able to use the VTech SN6197 with the existing phone line was perfect. Anything that makes him feel like he doesn’t have to spend extra money is an easy sell.

My mother-in-laws favorite feature, was the Voice Announce Caller ID. For some reason those pesky sales and telemarketers prey on my in-laws. Not really, but if you ask them they do! The voice announce caller ID can let my mother-in-law decide if she needs to answer the incoming call based on who’s calling.

Big buttons and Photo speed dial are features that enhanced my in-laws ability to use the phone with ease. Being able to put the images of the people you call the most right on the main phone. That really gives me peace of mind. A simple touch of a button on the main phone or pendant, will call me or my husband instantly!
