Are you in a caregiver role? A caregiver is someone that takes care of another person. If you are helping take care of a child, a parent, a spouse, relative or friend in need you are considered a caregiver. Paid professionals that take on these roles are also considered caregivers.

Many of you know last summer my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer. I didn’t even think twice about offering to take on the caregiver role for her. Fortunately for me, I having an amazing husband and was able to drop everything and go to her side. Being in the empty nest stage of our life made it easy to for me to be where I needed to be. I am glad to say one year later, my mom has beat cancer and is becoming strong and healthy once again.

While I didn’t encounter caregiver stress during our time together, I can see how it could sneak up on you. Being in a caregiver role can take its toll on your mental and physical health and wellness. Meeting the demands of the caregiver role can lead to Caregiver Stress.

Care giving was as rewarding experience for me. I’ll have to admit during some treatments, surgeries or appointments I did notice my anxiety levels on the rise. Since I do a lot of walking, it was easy for me to alleviate my stress by moving around. I walked in the cold, rain and heat. The halls of the hospital make great walking paths and can help put your mind at ease while improving your health.

Unfortunately, women are more likely to suffer from caregiver stress. Believe it or not, some stress is can be good for you. Working your way through some stressful situations can improve your coping skills and build your resilience. Exposure to long-term stress can be detrimental to your own health and wellness, that is why it’s important to know the signs and symptoms of Caregiver Stress. Disrupted sleep, weight fluctuations, mood swings, and headaches can all be signs of caregiver stress or other health issues.
