Spring is my favorite time of year! Flowers blooming, birds chirping, kids playing, and sunny days make me smile. I am amazed daily at the way our amazing God shows his work in each and every day we experience. Baseball and softball are also a big part of spring and even summer in Pennsylvania. When baseball season is in full swing, my mood changes a bit and I start to feel like Spring is Bittersweet.
I also know that spring was also one of my brother’s favorite times of the year. You will notice I said, “was.” You see my brother is no longer in this world with us to enjoy the start of spring. On October 21st, 2008 my brother died of Cancer. He was only 37 years old, a son, friend, brother, husband, coach and father of three amazing kids. Spring is Bittersweet because he should be here coaching baseball, watching his kids thrive and calling me to exchange recipes and sports schedules. Cancer sucks! It destroys so many things and breaks so many people. Cancer sucks!
Spring is bittersweet because my brother and I were raised in small rural town. A town that rallies around it’s people and gives back in anyway they can. This town, Halifax, Pennsylvania and a local grocery store, Giant (where my brother worked for many years) came together and sponsored the local midget baseball in honor of my brother. Joe Ertter Memorial Field, has lights and an electronic score board, a big deal for a small town. Spring is bittersweet because my brother’s love of his family, kids, Giant, coaching and community live on in our hometown for everyone to enjoy for years to come.
Cancer Sucks! I miss my brother! Spring is bittersweet!
