Having workout equipment at home is a great way to squeeze in some activity when you can’t make it to the gym or when a gym membership isn’t feasible in your budget. It’s easy to build a collection of workout equipment to use at home without making a large investment.
Often times you can find people who are tired of using their treadmill or elliptical as a clothes hanger or storage space. You will find lots of people willing to part with their workout equipment at a fraction of the original price. In the spring (when New Year’s Resolutions are over) is a great time to buy used equipment for cheap or even, FREE. (One of our favorite words).
Be sure to keep an eye out on Craigslist, free cycle, thrift stores, and local Facebook sale groups. You can also put out your own in search of ad, with your workout equipment needs and the prices you are willing to pay. Don’t forget to tell friends and family what kinds of workout equipment you are searching for. They may come across a great deal for you or even be willing to lend you workout equipment.
My Favorite Workout Equipment To Have At Home:
Cardio Equipment: This can be a stair stepper, gazelle, exercise bike, treadmill, or elliptical to help get your heart rate up and to burn calories. Be sure that you try out the equipment before buying to make sure that the computer works and that you actually will use the equipment. I am picky on elliptical and can’t use ones that requires my hands to move, I can only do the ones that have some were for me to hold.
Jump Rope This is one of my favorites to do and the kids can get in on the action as well. Be sure you get a jump rope that is the proper length for your height and that you have a place in your home you can use it without hitting a light fixture or the ceiling.
Kettlebells These are a great way to get in a very versatile strength training workout. I went to a sports store and tested out the different weights to find one that wouldn’t cause me to hurt myself but challenged me. This is one that I love to do while doing chores around the house. I will do what I need to for ten minutes then do a round of kettle bell work outs and repeat the cycle. Kettle bells are perfect for building up your core strength.
Dumbbell And Barbell Set These are great to have once you get more into strength training. Having a set that can work as both is a space saver and adjustable plates also allow for you to create new work outs. If you buy a set that isn’t adjustable be sure that you don’t buy a weight set that doesn’t have challenging weights or has to large of weights.
Work Out Dvds Some of my favorites is Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred, Biggest Loser Workouts, and Walk Away The Pounds. These are great workouts in 30 minutes that work every part of your body and getting your heart rate going to burn the max calories.
Tennis Shoes Easy to lace up and go for a quick walk or jog around the blog. I have found wearing tennis shoes just around the house while doing chores can seem to make me walk a bit faster and move more.
Even with a gym membership it’s important to have a backup plan. I have had to work out at home instead of a gym when school is canceled due to weather, sick kids, or just bad weather conditions so I couldn’t get there. Be sure to check with a doctor before bringing any workout regime to make sure you have no injuries or restrictions on what you can do.
