What kind of cheese should I use to make Weight Watchers Freestyle pizza recipes?

Weight Watchers Freestyle is awesome. Like all the other Weight Watchers programs you have a lot of choices…you can eat anything as long as you are tracking it and have adequate points available for the day / week.

Here are some of the options I like to use when I’m making Weight Watchers Freestyle pizza recipes.

  • Kraft fat free shredded mozzarella (I buy mine at Walmart and it’s super low points)
  • Low fat / part skim mozzarella shredded or fresh
  • Low fat shredded cheddar
  • Italian blend shredded cheese
  • Grated parmesan

Remember that just because you can eat anything doesn’t mean you should go crazy. The whole point of the Freestyle program is to learn portions and healthy choices. I usually try and add as much veggies and lean protein as possible before adding cheese of any kind.

What are some good protein choices for Weight Watchers Freestyle pizza recipes?

This is a great question! A lot of the choices for traditional pizzas are fatty meats. Don’t worry, there are a lot of great choices that you can use for making a healthy, points friendly, Weight Watchers Freestyle pizza. Here are some of the lean protein choices I like to use when making pizzas.

  • Ground turkey
  • Turkey pepperoni
  • Cooked then sliced chicken sausage
  • Sliced or diced boneless skinless chicken breast
  • Real bacon bits

Don’t forget that you can use beef and pork products but they’re going to be much higher in points. There are smart ways to make Weight Watchers Freestyle pizza recipes that incorporate red meats but it’s a lot more healthy and point friendly to use turkey, chicken, or withhold the meat altogether!

Now I have crusts, what do I put on top that’s Weight Watchers Freestyle friendly?

Here’s where we can get creative! There are a lot of awesome recipes out there for entire pizzas so I’ll include those below and I’m going to offer up some options and combinations that I really enjoy as well!

Combinations I really love:

These do not include point calculations. Each pizza is different depending on how much of any one ingredient you include. Making pizza isn’t a science and everyone is different so when you are putting on your toppings remember to count the stuff that’s not free on Freestyle! Most of your veggies and seasonings are going to be free especially in small amounts.

When I’m making my pizzas I put all the ingredients into my Weight Watchers app as I’m cooking. It’s a great way to see how much each ingredient is impacting the overall score and occasionally it helps me redirect and focus on more healthy choices.

Using the Weight Watchers app to calculate your points is the best way to be sure you are keeping yourself accountable to your points and your plan. I recommend you calculate and track everything for yourself when you’re using the Weight Watchers Freestyle program. Just ‘winging’ it will work for a bit but it’s not going to get you the results you want in the long term!

Chicken Alfredo Pizza | Use shredded, chopped or diced chicken breast along with a low fat alfredo sauce with a little parmesan on top for a great and unique pizza flavor combo!

Buffalo Chicken Pizza | One of my all time favorite pizza choices that is easy to make and so tasty. Ground chicken or shredded chicken breast works best and I usually use Frank’s Red Hot for a thin layer of sauce with fat free mozzarella or parmesan cheese on top! A drizzle of low fat ranch is nice on top or for dipping.

Taco Pizza | When I know that I need to work in more veggies but I’m craving pizza this is where I turn! I use ground turkey with taco seasoning, salsa in place of sauce, and then I top with diced tomatoes, shredded lettuce, some olives or peppers, and then a light drizzle of low fat or fat free sour cream on top.

Veggie Pizza | No meat Monday’s anyone? This is really easy. I use red sauce for the base and then I top with all my favorite vegetables! Tomatoes, mushrooms, peppers, olives, spinach or kale, and occasionally I’ll go crazy and put some shredded carrots in the mix as well. Ranch dressing mix in fat free sour cream or cream cheese makes an excellent sauce choice for this one as well!

Do you have any suggestions for free toppings to include on my Weight Watchers pizzas?

Absolutely! There are so many great options for toppings on your Weight Watchers pizzas that are zero points! Freestyle gives us a lot of free choices and we can take advantage of those to make our pizzas as healthy and low point as possible.

Assume these are 1 serving each, remember, just because something is zero points that doesn’t mean you can eat your body weight in it and expect to lose weight. Common sense and portion control are key, as with any healthy lifestyle.

  • Corn | I seriously love corn and it’s a great topping for some crunch and a little sweetness.
  • Onions | Cooked or raw they’re a delicious topping that I love to include with chicken, black olives, and spinach!
  • Spinach | Raw or include it before cooking for a softer and less obvious flavor! Goes great on white pizzas or taco pizzas.
  • Tomatoes | An obvious choice for pizza!
  • Kale | Great with mozzarella and tomatoes.
  • Black Beans | Awesome on a taco pizza and a great fiber boost to your pizza.
  • Broccoli | If you are making chicken alfredo pizza you have to add some broccoli!
