When we have any kind of gathering at our home, food becomes the center of attention like this ham and cheese calzone recipe. I’m not complaining. I like to eat as much as the next person, but sometimes it’s difficult to come up with food that tastes great and is good for you, too.
My friends and family know I try my hardest to make better choices about the food I eat and the food I feed them. Many years ago I earned the name, “Homemade Lady.” This title was awarded to me because I was making most of the food for friends and family from scratch. Even though I am not the same “Homemade Lady” I was 20 years ago, I still rely on nutritious and delicious ingredients in all of my recipes.
Friendship Dairies™ cottage cheese is one of my go-to foods. A lot of people will turn their nose up immediately at the mention of cottage cheese. Of course I love a good challenge and was delighted to participate in the Power of Friendship Campaign.

Preparing this Ham and Cheese Calzone Recipe as part of the challenge was easy. One of the main ingredients in the recipe was cottage cheese. Everyone thought it tasted amazing, it fed a crowd and satisfied everyone at the table. Friendship Dairies cottage chees is thicker, richer and cheesier than your typical cottage cheese. You can add it to any recipe in place of heavier ingredients like ricotta, sour cream, mayonnaise or high-fat

Ham and Cheese Calzone Recipe
The dough for the Ham and Cheese Calzone Recipe doesn’t have to be complicated. Using frozen pizza dough is the simplest choice. When I picked up the Friendship Dairies cottage cheese at Wegmans I was able purchase one whole wheat pizza dough and one white pizza dough. If you can’t find frozen pizza dough, bread dough, or homemade pizza crust (there were the days when I used to make my own) would work just fine. Each pizza dough should make two Ham and Cheese Calzones approximately 8 inches long.
Once you have the dough figured out, you will have to focus on the filling. I used baked ham, part-skim mozzarella cheese, Friendship Dairies 1% small curd cottage cheese, along with a few spices. Parmesan cheese and melted butter are added to the outside of the Ham and Cheese Calzone to give it a brown and crunchy crust.
A nice flat floured surface will be necessary to roll your dough flat. Tear each thawed pizza dough in half. Roll each piece of dough to a rectangle approx 9 by 12. I’d suggest cooking the Ham and Cheese Calzone Recipe on parchment paper or using a non-stick spray on an 11 x 14 cookie sheet, also know as a jelly roll pan.
Spread seasoned Friendship Dairies cottage cheese Lengthwise on one side of the dough. Add a layer of ham, a layer of mozzarella and finish with a second layer of ham. Fold dough over and seal edges tightly. Brush with melted butter and top with Parmesan cheese and additional spices if desired.
Bake at 400 degrees for 15 – 1 8 minutes or until golden brown.
